Schema markup for local businesses, explained simply

Schema markup for a local business is a small block of code, usually written in a format called JSON-LD, that tells search engines your business facts in a structured way: your name, type of business, address, phone number, opening hours, location and more. Visitors never see it, but it helps Google understand your website clearly and can make some pages eligible for rich results, such as product prices, review stars or breadcrumb trails in search listings.

You don't need to be a developer to understand what schema does or to check that your website uses it properly. This guide explains structured data in plain language, which types matter for Indian local businesses, what it can and can't do, and how to test it.

Key takeaways

  • Schema describes facts on your page in a format machines can read. It doesn't replace good content.
  • JSON-LD is the format Google recommends, and it sits separately from your visible design.
  • LocalBusiness (or a more specific type such as Restaurant or Dentist) is the starting point.
  • Markup must match what's visible on the page. Hidden or false data can lead to penalties.
  • Several rich result types have been restricted in recent years, so set expectations carefully.

What structured data actually is

Search engines read your page like a stranger reading a signboard in a new city. They can usually work out what it says, but mistakes happen. Is "9876543210" a phone number or an order ID? Is "Sector 18" the address or a project name? Structured data removes the guesswork by labelling each fact.

The labels come from Schema.org, a shared vocabulary supported by the major search engines. Your business details can be written in three formats (JSON-LD, Microdata and RDFa), but JSON-LD is the easiest to maintain. It sits in a script block in the page code, separate from the design, so changing your layout doesn't break it.

The most useful schema markup for local business websites

LocalBusiness and its subtypes

This is the core type for any business that customers visit or that serves a local area. Schema.org offers more specific subtypes, and using the most accurate one helps. Examples include Restaurant, CafeOrCoffeeShop, Bakery, Dentist, MedicalClinic, Hospital, BeautySalon, DaySpa, AutoRepair, RealEstateAgent, LegalService, AccountingService, HealthClub and Store types such as ElectronicsStore or FurnitureStore.

Google's documentation on local business structured data lists the properties it supports.

Restaurant-specific properties

Restaurants and cafés can add servesCuisine (for example "South Indian", "Mughlai"), acceptsReservations and hasMenu, which points to your menu page. There's no special menu rich result to expect, but a clear HTML menu page plus this markup helps search engines connect your dishes to your restaurant. The restaurant website designs show text-based menus that suit this approach.

Healthcare types

Hospitals and clinics can use Hospital, MedicalClinic or Dentist, and Physician for individual doctors, along with properties such as medicalSpecialty. Keep claims factual and matched to the visible page, and be careful with anything that looks like a treatment promise. Healthcare content is judged strictly. See the hospital and clinic website designs for how department and doctor pages can be structured.

Product and Offer

Online stores and shops with product pages should use Product with offers (price in INR, availability) and, where you collect genuine customer reviews on the product page, review and aggregateRating. This can show price, stock status and ratings in search results. Our guide to e-commerce website features covers product pages in more depth.

BreadcrumbList, Organization and WebSite

Breadcrumb markup can replace a long URL in search results with a readable path like "Home › Services › Root Canal Treatment". Organization markup states your official name, logo and social profiles. These are simple to add and useful for almost every site.

Event, Course and Article

A wedding venue listing public events, a coaching institute listing courses, or a business publishing blog posts can use these types where the content fits. Only mark up what's actually on the page.

Be realistic about FAQ markup: Since 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for a limited set of well-known, authoritative government and health websites. You can still use FAQ structured data to describe your content clearly, but most business sites should not expect expandable FAQs in search results.

Rules that keep your rich results safe

Google treats misleading structured data as spam. Follow these rules:

  1. Match the visible page. If your markup says you're open until 11 pm, the page must say the same.
  2. Don't mark up hidden content or information users can't see.
  3. No self-serving review stars. Reviews your business collects about itself and marks up with LocalBusiness or Organization aren't eligible for star snippets. Product reviews from genuine buyers on product pages are a different case.
  4. Don't invent ratings or copy reviews from other platforms into your markup.
  5. Keep it updated. Changed phone numbers and old hours in the markup are a common problem after redesigns.

How to add JSON-LD to your website

How you add schema depends on how your website is built:

  • WordPress: Many SEO plugins add Organization, WebSite, Article and breadcrumb markup automatically. LocalBusiness details often need a settings page filled in or an add-on.
  • Hosted store platforms: Themes usually add Product markup. Check it with testing tools, as some themes output incomplete data.
  • Custom-coded websites: A developer adds JSON-LD templates that pull live data from your database, so prices, hours and addresses stay in sync.

For multi-branch businesses, each branch page should carry its own LocalBusiness markup with that branch's address, phone, hours and coordinates, all matching that branch's Google Business Profile.

Testing and monitoring your structured data

  1. Run important pages through Google's Rich Results Test to see which rich result types are detected and whether there are errors.
  2. Use the Schema Markup Validator from Schema.org for a broader check of all types, including ones Google doesn't show as rich results.
  3. In Google Search Console, check the enhancement reports for products, breadcrumbs and other detected types after launch.
  4. Re-test after every redesign, theme change or plugin update.

Warnings about optional fields are not emergencies. Errors on required fields are. Fix those first.

Where schema fits in your SEO plan

Structured data adds to your SEO work but doesn't replace it. A clinic with thin service pages and no Google Business Profile won't be saved by perfect markup. Get the fundamentals right first: useful pages, fast mobile performance, consistent business details and genuine reviews. Our local SEO guide and pre-launch SEO checklist cover those basics.

If you're planning a new website, ask your developer to include structured data from the start rather than bolting it on later. If you already have a site, you can message Webmaintor on WhatsApp to have its LocalBusiness, Product and breadcrumb markup checked.

Frequently asked questions

Does schema markup improve Google rankings?

Google has said structured data is not a direct ranking factor. It helps Google understand your content and can make pages eligible for rich results, which may improve how your listing looks and how often people click it. Clear business details also support consistency across the web, which matters for local search.

What is JSON-LD in simple words?

JSON-LD is a way of writing labelled facts about a page, such as "name", "telephone" and "openingHours", in a small script block. Search engines read it, but visitors don't see it. Google recommends it because it's kept separate from the visible design, which makes it easier to add, update and test.

Can I show review stars for my business in Google search?

Not by marking up reviews about your own business on your website. Google doesn't show star snippets for self-serving LocalBusiness or Organization reviews. Your Google Business Profile shows your Google reviews in local results. Product pages with genuine customer reviews can be eligible for review snippets.

Which schema type should a small clinic use?

Choose the most specific type that fits, such as Dentist for a dental clinic or MedicalClinic for a general practice, with name, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates and sameAs links. Individual doctor pages can use Physician. Keep everything consistent with what's visible on the page and your Google Business Profile.

How do I know if my website already has structured data?

Paste a page URL into Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema.org validator. Both tools show every structured data item found and flag errors. Google Search Console also lists detected types under its enhancement reports once your site is verified and has been crawled.
